With a parade and a friendly regatta among the different sails, the Haiti Sailing Cup launches its annual event. It’s the premier sailboat regatta in the Caribbean, not just in Haiti.
That regatta is unique because our fishermen are truly incredible sailors. Their boats are made and carved with native materials, and they must rely on each other both to launch and to beach their boats, which operate solely on their handmade sails. They possess no keel, daggerboard, rudder, or leeward to counteract the force of the wind but must use their own body weight in coordinated movements to tack and control their vessels.
A truly unique technique that has been used for years and one that most sailors today no longer practice.
Our first Premier Sailboat Parade Race was held in October 2014 on the Boulevard de Cap-Haïtien and then again in December of that same year. The year 2018 brought even more fishermen, and we were ecstatic about the sponsors and other organizations that decided to join our great cause. The numerous sailboats in the bay sparked a friendly, competitive, and spirited race among the fishermen and their sponsors. Many activities were held, including one in particular in collaboration with 4Ocean, which brought together many community members, young and old, united in the cause of cleaning the beach. An incredible sight!!!! This organization is truly making an impact in its community.

The Haiti Sailing Cup, in collaboration with local fishermen and event sponsors, recently carried out a remarkable initiative in Cap-Haitien. Together, they conducted a beach cleanup, collecting over 200 pounds of trash. This effort not only strengthened community ties but also reaffirmed the Haiti Sailing Cup’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of the local fishing community.
During the cleanup, materials were recovered that will soon be converted into recycled sails for the fishermen in the area. This initiative was made possible through the support of our valuable sponsors and has a direct impact on the lives of the fishermen in Cap-Haitien, providing them with essential resources for their daily activities at sea. The Haiti Sailing Cup takes pride in its partnership with Sails for Sustenance, which enables the transformation of collected waste into practical and sustainable solutions for the local community.
